Obducite
Primary · every roll
Spent on every Masterwork roll. The cost scales with the item's current Quality, plus a flat charge for the rank-25 Capstone step.
Gear improvement system explained — Quality scaling, Capstone Bonus, and material costs.
Heads up: material costs, exact ranks, and refund formulas are rebalanced every season. This page covers the system as a whole — for current values, check the Blacksmith UI in-game.
Each Masterwork rank adds a flat percentage to the item’s base stat (Armor on armor, Damage on weapons, All Resistance on jewelry) and the same percentage to every affix value on the item. Ranks compound, so the final stages of an upgrade carry the most absolute power.
An upgrade attempt may grant more than one rank at once, so the actual number of clicks to reach max is fewer than the rank count.
Reaching maximum Quality unlocks the Capstone Bonus — a one-time, significantly larger boost applied to one random affix. It can land on a normal affix, a Tempered affix, or a Greater Affix, and the winning affix is highlighted in-game with a distinct color.
The Capstone stacks with Greater Affix bonuses, so an affix that is both Greater and picked by the Capstone carries both bonuses at once.

Legendary / Unique upgrades
Salvaged from rare and legendary gear. Consumed alongside Obducite when Masterworking Legendary or Unique items.
Mythic Unique upgrades
High-tier crafting material. Consumed alongside Obducite when Masterworking Mythic Unique items.
All upgrades
Required as a secondary cost across all Masterworking upgrades.
Capstone reroll
Rare boss material consumed when rerolling the Capstone Bonus to land it on a different affix.
Exact per-roll quantities and which secondary material applies to which item type vary by season. Check the Blacksmith UI for current values.
If the Capstone Bonus landed on a low-priority affix, you can reroll it to redistribute onto a different affix. The reroll does not reset your Quality progress — only the affix the bonus targets.
Reroll cost is paid in Obducite, a rare boss material (Neathiron), and Gold. The reroll is repeatable as long as you have the materials, so chasing a specific affix is a question of farming, not luck-locked progress.
Primary Obducite source from Tier 60 and above. Scale the tier up as your build allows for better yield per run.
Pick the Spoils of Materials chest at the end of a Horde run for a concentrated Obducite stockpile.
Dedicated Obducite-tagged Undercity run. Steady drop on completion and stacks with timer extensions.
Barter a Masterworking Cache from the Mercenary Den vendors as a passive top-up.
Salvaging a Masterworked Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique at the Blacksmith returns a portion of the materials you spent. The refund scales with the item’s current Masterwork stage — not Masterworked, partially Masterworked, or fully Masterworked with Capstone applied — so a heavily upgraded item refunds proportionally more than a lightly upgraded one. The in-game salvage prompt previews the exact return.
Gold and reroll-only materials (e.g. the Capstone reroll’s rare component) are not refunded.
Salvaging any Mythic Unique always yields one Resplendent Spark — even on a dropped item that was never Masterworked. Four Sparks craft a new Mythic Unique at the Alchemist.
Masterworking is the Blacksmith endgame system that pushes Legendary, Unique, and Mythic Unique gear past base values. Each rank multiplies stats and affixes; reaching max Quality unlocks a one-time Capstone Bonus on a random affix that stacks with Greater Affixes. If the bonus lands wrong, reroll it without losing Quality progress. Salvage refunds materials proportionally to how far the item was upgraded.
